What I Brought From The Supermarket..

After taking photographs of other packaging I thought I would buy two different types so I could take them apart and have a lot at how they were built.

The first was a Crafty Dan Brewhouse. I chose these particular one because of the look of the packaging, I thought it looked quite sheek and modern looking, something I would by for my fella (which he liked the beer by the way). It also had full packaging all around the product with the three windows to show the bottles.

The front of the box has small individual windows to show off the type of beer there is. As this box is a variety box, I think this is a very good idea as the consumer would want to see what beer they were choosing.

The box at angle to show the type of shape it is. It has huge typography running down both sides of the box, advertising the brand no matter which way it is stacked on the shelves.

The top is a slot for the handle to slide through. The handle is made from plastic which creates a strong support for the box. Though for 'environmentally friendly' this isn't such a good idea, as this is more materials for those to sort out into different recycling bins (which can/will put people of recycling the whole packaging).

The bottom of the box folds into each other. The bar code printed on the bottom with the 'out of date - date'.

Once I opened the box there was more packaging inside, a single piece of cardboard with wholes through the top for each of the neck of the bottles to fit into - this creates more stability for the bottles, making sure they do not crack or break. Though this is more materials being used..

A single piece of card to help keep the bottles in place.

Once the bottles were took out of the box, you could see there a small pieces of card sticking out of the front, again to help keep the bottles in place, to prevent damage to the product inside.

Finally, I opened the box completely to show the net, it was interesting to find the only bit of glue that was used in the packaging was the strip down the one side of the box (the highlighted pink colour). This was really good see, using a limited amount of glue (unlike some I have found).

This packaging looked very complicated when I first took a look at it, but I chose it because I liked the use of colour all over the box, and the use of typography repeated in places, so that no matter how the product is packed, the branding is still shown.

I think the limited amount of glue used in the packaging, only worked because of the handle being a separate piece from the cardboard. Unlike other packaging that I found where the handle was part of the cardboard piece itself, which used a lot more glue than this one.

The second product I brought was the Stella Artois Cidre Raspberry, I brought this was as it was very different to the last product.

This shows the packaging, in use, with the bottles in side. The bottles can easily slide out of the packing with this style, making an easy storage container.

The print appears all over the packaging even on both sides of the handles. Ensuring the name of the brand can be seen at all angles. As soon as I took out the product the packaging became very limp and started to fold in on intself - this shows me that it would not be suitable for a second use ad it is already weaken by the first.

From the top you can see the bottles were in their own individual sections, protecting the bottles from clanking against each and damage. This also shows the handle having a piece going over the top, like a double layer of cardboard to give more strength.

The bottom doesn't continue with the pink and black, it is just plain white with the bar code printed on. The white does still fit in with the pattern though I think looks quite plain. The bottom was attached by tabs slotting into cuts in the cardboard, I couldn't find any glue trace on there, though there could of been.

This photograph shows the net of the packaging once it had been taken a part, the pink highlighted pen shows where the glue was when taking it apart. This had a lot more glue on it then what I first thought, as it was such a thin piece of card, it obviously needs more strength to hold up together.

The packaging was very thin and flimsy. It definitely would not be able to be used as something else once it had done its first purpose. This was shown when i took out the bottles it started to collapse into itself and had weakened straight away.
